Most of us have heard of and are curious about the so-called secret societies of the world. The Freemasons, the Illuminati, the Knights Templars, the Skull and Bones, and Scientology are some of the most prominent organizations. These organizations are not your typical religious entities. A better word for them would be coterie, which is defined as “an intimate and often exclusive group of persons with a unifying common interest or purpose.”

The philosophy of these so-called secret societies is that human beings can excel in life with the right understanding, a commitment to a set of values and principals, and a pledge of secrecy and unity among the group. These values and principals, however, are based on ancient spiritual teachings and principals. The teachings, when adhered to, enlightens, and empowers the initiate, with the abilities to overcome the challenges in life.

These so-called secret societies or organizations aren’t concerned with the masses and their struggles. Which is, somewhat contrary to most religious organizations who claim to want to save souls and offer salvation to the world. The truth is human beings do have a higher or divine component to our being. Realizing that higher or divine component is achieved through a spiritual journey. It is a journey to reconnect with God so that we may know who we are, why we are here and how to succeed in Life and the Afterlife.

Most so-called secret societies focus primarily on success in the material world and less on the spiritual world. However, they do teach what I would call is “self-development” concepts and principals that, if adhered to, will and can be beneficial to anyone.

To answer the question, are secret societies spiritual, I would have to say yes because the self-enhancing teachings are based on ancient spiritual concepts that guides us to becoming better human beings.
