In-laws – A Key Factor in a Successful Marriage

Scenario: You have found the love of your life and now you get a chance to meet their family. It’s a mixed bunch, the father is arrogant, the mother is narcissist, the brother is an ex-con, and one of the sisters is addicted to drugs. When you marry the love of your life these people become your family, your In-laws.  Regardless of their circumstances, personalities or idiosyncrasies your spouse probably still loves them, thus, you will have to get along with them for the sake of a happy and peaceful marriage.

How do you do this? You do this by being accepting, respectful, and non-judgmental towards your in-laws. Your tolerance of your spouse’s family will go a long way in him or her them doing the same for your family.  It would be good to talk to each other about each other’s family and the issues they present. If you display harsh or malevolent energy toward your spouse’s family, you will be hurting them because of the love and concern they have for their family members regardless of their short-comings.

If there is an issue that evokes strong emotions between your partner and a family member, try to limit the situations where your partner and that family member share the same space.  If your concerns are legitimate, your significant other should respect your feeling and support you while continuing to show concern and love to their family member.
